WatchFTP 3.5 beta
Feb 3rd, 2013, 10:40am

WatchFTP v3.5 beta 1

We have a new beta available for WatchFTP, this will be a major new release.

What's new
Until v3.4 (the current released version), WatchFTP compared the files on your FTP server
to the files on your Windows file system to determine if they should be downloaded. This
way of comparing files causes several problems:
- Files must always be downloaded, even if you only want a notification email for those files
- You could not move, rename or change downloaded files because WatchFTP needed them to compare the FTP files with
- It was quite difficult (sometimes impossible) to properly support FTP servers in other timezones

In this new beta the file comparison algorithm has changed. Instead of comparing FTP files with downloaded Windows files,
WatchFTP stores the result of scanning the FTP server in the task directory. This allows WatchFTP to compare
files on your FTP site with the results of the previous scan.

What's next
A future v3.5 beta will implement tasks that do not download files but only alert you to new/changed FTP files.
Most likely we will also implement a new action that creates a daily or weekly report of new/changed FTP files.

Installing
When you install this beta and start the WatchFTP control center, you will be prompted for each of your
tasks to perform an initial scan of the FTP server.

Downloads
This beta is now the official release, download here:

WatchFTP 3.5 beta 2

What's new
This new beta allows you to monitor FTP sites without downloading new or changed files. You can send an email or run a batch file when changes are detected.
Please note that the help file and user interface still mention "downloaded files" a lot - obviously when you set the option to not download files that doesn't make sense. Also, the email task still allows you to "attach the downloaded file"...

What's fixed
Beta 1 had a little bug... If a task was stopped while it was actively scanning the FTP site, the next time you start the task it would "detect" some files as new again.
This new beta supports Win2000 and Win2003 (without service packs) again.
If you didn't run a (beta 1) task for more than ~1 week all files on your FTP server would be detected as "new". Beta 2 fixes this as well.

What's next
A new Action to create a daily/weekly report of detected changes.

Downloads
See the first post above for the beta 2 downloads.

This new beta has a new window that shows you the changes (new, deleted and changed files/directories) between two dates. Right-click the task and select "Changes Since..." (or press CTRL+SHIFT+H).

See the top post for the new download links.

WatchFTP v3.5 beta 4

This new beta has several small bug-fixes and little tweaks. There is one new feature: WatchFTP has a new Language menu that allows you to switch the language of the user interface.

For the downloads, see the first post above.

WatchFTP v3.5 beta 5

The language selection for wfrun.exe (the task runner) was not implemented properly so it would always run in "English" mode.
When you set the option to delete files after download and the file was already gone, previous versions kept trying to delete those files. This new beta first checks if the file still exists.

Download links for this new beta are in the top post.

WatchFTP v3.5 beta 6

This new beta has a few bug-fixes for sending emails.
When you want to attach files that have non-US (a-z) characters in their (full path) names, the files were not attached.
The message body also had issues with non-US characters.

The download links are in the "top post".

WatchFTP v3.5 beta 10

This new beta version has several small improvements and fixes.
One new experimental feature is "download speed throttling", this allows you
to limit the bandwidth used by WatchFTP during certain hours of the day.

To enable this new option, start the WatchFTP Control Center and select
View -> Task Directory
This opens Windows Explorer inside the directory where WatchFTP task settings are stored.
There you will find a file called example_global.ini
- rename this file to global.ini
- edit global.ini and follow the (english only) directions inside to enable throttling.

The download links for this new beta version are in the "top post" above.

WatchFTP v3.5 beta 11

A further fix for Win2000 compatibility is implemented.
Spanish, French and German translations completed.
The "Changes Since" window has a Download button.
"Changes Since" did not show everything if a directory was deleted or renamed.

See the top post for the download link.

WatchFTP v3.5 beta 12

WF had some problems when a root directory was selected with certain characters in its name.
You can now change the way $DATE$ and $TIME$ variables are formatted for the Email action.
You can optionally protect the WatchFTP Control Center with a password.

The download links are in the top post.

So I have a question or maybe a feature for you.

After the file has been transferred to the target folder can you provide a feature to move the file to a parent folder. In our system the target folder is actively being scanned by another application for new files. If that application detects partial or broken files they are moved to a quarantine folder. (NOT DESIRED).

The desired approach would be to transfer the files to a <target folder>/creating (this creating subfolder is ignored by the application). then after the files have been transferred, have watchftp move them up a level (via a rename).

Also can you get wire speed through you application (assuming a tuned ftp environment like WIN2008R2 would provide)

So far this watchftp application seems very close to what I need and I would recommend it to my customers pending some additional testing.

What you can do right now is running a batch script for every downloaded file which moves the file to a different location. You will find it on tab in "Additional Actions", use something like

Code:
move "%WF_FILE%" c:\myotherfolder

See here for all other variables you can use:

Correct, but Jim makes a good point.

However, instead of downloading to a temp subfolder and after that moving to its final destination, I think I will implement it like this:

On the window where you set the "Sync Folder" (the windows directory), I will add
Temp Folder:
    [                              ] <Browse>
and let it default to something like  C:\Temp.
When the download is completed (to C:\Temp), the file is moved to its real destination.

Expect a new beta with this functionality somewhere tomorrow.

I like your prompt actions.

I wanted to add another point.  If my destination folder is M:\<folder> and the temp folder was another drive letter  c:\temp  Then the file would have to be copied again.... no choice. But if the temp and destination were on the same filesystem a much better solution would be to move the file.

A file copy while fast, has the same potential for problems in my application.  I also wanted to mention that the files I deal with are generally measured in 10's or 100's of GB (it is video).

If your code had this addition optimization it would be a much better solution. That being, if the temp folder was on the same drive letter as the target folder then using a move rather than a copy as it is not only much faster but more atomic and solves my issue.

Making sure the file in the target folder is deleted is beneficial as well (possibly an option).

Thanks for your quick actions and thoughts.

There were some family issues I had to take care of today, but I will make sure it is finished later this weekend.

Yes, I know about Move vs Copy/Delete. If it is the same drive-letter the Move-call is more like a rename. Just messing a bit with file pointers in the source (M:\Temp) and target directory (M:\Downloads).
As you can enter a different folder to use as "temp" for each of your tasks it should work fine.

Jim,

Here are the downloads with your requested temp directory feature.

I had little time to test but I do not see why it shouldn't work. You can find it on the "Synchronization" tab.
